We
believe: v
National
Standards for Music Education provide the guideposts for curriculum
content. v
The
Kodály method is an effective pedagogy for building musicianship skills. v
General
music instruction is best sequenced in four sections-- Exposition,
Development, Improvisation, and Recapitulation. v
Critical
pedagogy is an appropriate strategy for general music instruction.
Critical Pedagogy for Music Education (CPME) is a view of music
education that centers on students being musicians. The teaching
activities break down the barriers that separate the music students hear
in the classroom from the music they prefer in their world outside.
When these barriers disappear, students and their teacher are
changed. Music learning occurs
when they “know that they know.” The
CPME term for this inner knowing is conscientization.
